Lottery Proceeds Go Toward Funding Public Schools

U.S. state governments operate lotteries. These monopolies don’t allow commercial competition, and use the proceeds to support state programs. As of August 2004, forty states operated lotteries. Nearly 90% of U.S. residents lived in a state that had an operating lottery. As of that date, any adult physically present in that state could purchase a lottery ticket. In the United States, lottery games have a small role in the overall budget of a state.

Lottery are popular

It’s no surprise that lotteries are popular. Throughout the world, people enjoy the chance to win big prizes. The first lottery was held in 1466 in Bruges, Belgium to provide prize money for the poor. As the concept spread throughout the world via trade and colonization, lottery games were a key component in financing the original thirteen colonies of the United States. In 1612, the Virginia Company raised 29,000 pounds through lottery games. Over time, lotteries became a popular way to distribute wealth and gained political acclaim as a means to finance political agendas.

In the United States, taxpayers fund hundreds of billions of dollars for public education each year, yet federal spending rarely exceeds congressional goals. Americans value education highly, and their teachers earn wages that are more than enough to live comfortably. Or are they only serving to exacerbate inequity?

They are operated by quasi-governmental or privatized corporations

These agencies are often run by private organizations but are regulated by the government. Some of these agencies are even organized like private corporations with board members appointed by government entities. These agencies are also known as “quasi-public” entities. But their role in society is more complex than this. In many countries, they serve the same purpose as private firms. But the question remains, should these organizations be run by private companies or should they remain a part of the government?
