The New York Daily News is a morning daily tabloid newspaper in the United States. It was founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson and is a subsidiary of the Tribune Company of Chicago. It became the first successful tabloid in the United States, attracting readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence, lurid photographs, and cartoons and entertainment features. At its peak in 1947, the newspaper had a circulation of over 2 million copies.
It was also the most influential of the New York City tabloid newspapers and was a major influence on American journalism. In the early 20th century, it often rivaled its more sensational competitor, the New York Post, in its coverage of local politics and sports. The paper was known for its hard-hitting style and investigative reporting, and many of its writers went on to have prominent careers in journalism or public service.
In addition to its newspaper, the Daily News publishes several special issues each year such as a Yale-Harvard Game Day issue, a Commencement issue, and the first-year issue. The News is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper and is editorially and financially independent of the University. The News staff is composed of student editors, writers and contributors ranging in age from their first year to recent graduates. The Yale Daily News Historical Archive is a digital collection of the newspaper’s archived issues from 1996 to the present.
