Entertaiment is the act of entertaining, or the thing that gives pleasure, amusement, or distraction to the mind or senses. It can include activities such as: movies, television, and other video games; listening to music; reading books and other literary works; playing sports and other physical activities; and creating or appreciating visual art.
Entertaining is a complex activity. It requires the right mix of elements to be successful. It must be enjoyable for the audience, it must be creative and interesting, it must be socially acceptable and ethically sound. It must also hit on the points that the human brain was evolved to react deeply to, i.e., murders, backstabbing, and other themes of societal intrigue.
From Middle English entretenement, from Old French entretenement; see entertain.
